Ok.
Ok. I got nothing. It's a beautiful, lyrical piece of music played by Itzhak Perlman on his Strad, and I got nothing. A skater did her long program to the main theme from Schindler's List.
... I just, I can't, I mean, there are some things that are just really pushing at what's appropriate and I can't really feel like this is comfortable. I really gotta question the choice of music. At least she didn't have some sparkly, foofy costume on? But what would be appropriate? Black and white stripes with a cap? A yellow star? Ashes?
And this isn't the first person to do this! As a writer in Slate said some years ago about another figure skating routine to this music:
"I think I speak for all of us when I say, “Finally, someone has adapted the saddest scene from a Holocaust movie into an acrobatic figure-skating routine.” No? Just me? No one else?"
Even Johnny Weir has skated to it, which I mention only because he's one of the commentators and if anyone mentioned the questionable choice of music, I didn't hear it.
I'm completely sick and tired of hearing/seeing women skate to Carmen, but that's just irritating. This is grossly disrespectful.

Apparently she was German, too?
ReplyDeleteYes, but so many other people have skated to it, I feel like that is just extra weird, as opposed to the main weird. Then again, maybe it's more than that.
ReplyDeleteHere's the old Slate article - it has several of the people who've skated to it listed. There's some high profile names in there, and another German. I'm also positive a German pair skated to this, but can't remember off the top of my head.

Oh, great. As I'm minimally perusing the internet on this, apparently it's been used in gymnastics, as well? Wtf is wrong with people?
