I have a hard time viewing this as something other than I guess we should have statues of Hitler and Stalin and Mussolini at WWII memorials. How about Cornwallis, or at least Benedict Arnold for the Revolutionary War?++

Seriously, the only reason to have a law in Virginia that forbids removing statues, and it has several statements specifically about Confederate ones, is that somebody is trying to put exceptional protection for Confederate monuments. Plus, this was a law passed in 1998, so it's not some long-standing thing. It's a pattern of trying to stop people from correcting this fantasy of the 'gracious antebellum south'.

I suspect that this is also not the only way to interpret Virginia law, and there are probably other codes or statutes that could counter this nonsense about removing the covers.

++ I note the irony, as I presently live in a town named for Lord Amherst, one time Commander in Chief of the British Army and noted biological warfare experimenter. However, there are no statues.
