Caveat: the full text isn't out, this was just an announcement about some speech or document that is going to be released. Thus, there might be missing context. Nevertheless ...
The pope said: "You shouldn't fall into the 'sins of communication:' disinformation, or giving just one side, calumny that is sensationalized, or defamation, looking for things that are old news and have been dealt with and bringing them to light today."
You mean, like, idk, sexual harassment and abuse? Maybe inside the Church, nevermind outside of it? You seem to have the wrong end of the stick, here. your holiness.
Just for fun, lets add that whole Jesus' crucifixion story. Let's see:
- giving just one side? check.
- calumny that is sensationalized? check.
- or defamation? check.
- looking for things that are old news and have been dealt with? check
- bringing them to light today? oh, constantly and repeatedly.
Where's the Roman government account of this, or the multi-sided contemporary cultural account? All we have is accounts written after the fact by partisans with an agenda. Accounts that have since been translated and tweaked repeatedly to serve whatever purpose. Lots of people got crucified, it was a standard penalty for a lot of things under Rome. It's not like Jesus was the only one. Unless you were generally against corporal punishment and horrible death penalties, which were pretty popular at the time, it's a little silly to make this one thing a huge sensation. Defamation - where do you start? Between the Romans, until they became Christian, and the Jews forever, who hasn't been defamed in this story? Talk about old news. 2000+ years seems excessive, folks. Let it go.
So, Jesus is fake news? Good to know.
