I was thinking about something Mike Bruce said elsewhere, and am evolving my thought process to something like:

1) Some people will never be jerks, no matter what anyone else is doing.
2) Some people will always be jerks, no matter what anyone else is doing.
3) Some people will just do whatever they think everyone else is doing.

For that last group, I think there's a fairly decent population that will not be a jerk on their own, but given any kind of group behavior will go along with the group - if the group behaves well, they will behave well, if the group behaves badly, they behave badly. This takes many forms - but everyone else was doing it, I was just following orders, etc.

We don't have to worry about group 1, we cannot change group 2. However, it is highly probable that we can influence group 3 to hang out with group 1 and not group 2. Thus, we should do that.

  1. I think this captures an important part of what I've been feeling.
