I know I said I wasn't going to listen to NPR, but CBC had on an interview with Shania Twain, so ... This is what was on. Be aware, if you listen, that the segment about the slave auctions, and they are slave auctions, includes the audio from the materials the reporters collected that led to the CNN report which has triggered multiple protests.

It triggered many thoughts and emotions, but one of the loudest was that we have an incompetent bigot and his enablers running this country, actively supporting and supported by white supremacists, while actual slave auctions are happening, right now. There isn't an obvious logical thread I can state, here, but it seems entirely reasonable to me that our abrogation of our role as a leader in anti-racism, anti-slavery, and just general involvement on the world stage is not fully separable from this.

TIL that some languages apparently have words inherently differentiating one's status as a citizen or resident of the entity versus a member of a particular ethnic or cultural group? I don't quite grasp the whole thing, although I heard the point being made. What's interesting to me is a) that there is such a thing, which seems very revealing of something about a culture that would need such concepts built into the language, and b) that there seem to be people who think it's inaccurate to interpret the word choice as meaningful. Good News:

Good News: 1. Thruway is open between Buffalo and Rochester. 2. You can get on it going from Buffalo south to Pennsylvania, but you cannot get off of it between Buffalo and Pennsylvania. 3. Almost all the other major highways are open. 4. This is important, because with no highways open, there was no way to truck in food for the grocery stores, or gas for the cars and snow removal equipment and generators, etc. Yes, some places were starting to run low. (Yeah, they removed all the refineries and terminals years ago. Which is why our gas is still well above $3/gal. The closest place we get it from is Akron, OH. Wtf, government. P.S. Good plan!
