There's a lot of important information in this article, but I'm going to highlight one particular thing:
Animals consume a large proportion of antibiotics - as much as 80% in the US
Yep. We're being more restrictive in using antibiotics in people, but we're dumping them all over in agriculture. Why? At least in part because of large scale, close quarters, factory farming and processing of animals. Hello, wide-spread resistance.
NB: It isn't made explicit, although the info is there. Penicillin was discovered in 1928. It didn't make it into clinical use until 1945. That's 17 years. That's why the writer talks about issues with research and funding.
We've never managed to change the 10-20 years of research and trials that are needed for this, and that's for the ones that make it. Lots of things fall by the wayside in that time. Pharma companies (and VCs and other investors and stockholders, etc.) want to make money now.
Society needs to consider whether or not it is in its own best interests to support research, without a guaranteed or immediate return.
