I missed this earlier.

I missed this earlier. Wow. Read the link to the letter, it's special. Check the organizations these people belong to. It's a real who's who list of far right ideologues. I'm sure SPLC occasionally gets something wrong. It's human, we all do. But this is a real prize for corkscrew logic.

tl;dr
Dear media, please don't listen to SPLC. They're mean. They called us names.

Here's a hint or two, FRC and friends:

1) Violence has been done in the name of what you teach. At some point, it's not enough to say 'but we didn't tell them to commit violence!' Violence is not the litmus test of hate. It is most certainly an almost inevitable consequence of it, but you are lying to yourself and everyone else if you think that "we're non-violent" is a get out of jail free card for supporting, encouraging, and teaching hate. Not to mention that some of you are all over the whole "just war" thing when it suits you and for your purposes.

2) In that lawsuit they mention, someone is quoted as saying, “It’s an outrageous lie that some mainstream Christian group is a threat in terms of violence and racism.” Oh? You want to explain a lengthy history that runs right up to modern times where major, mainstream christian groups were out there talking about jews, blacks, and muslims and why they should be ostracized, controlled, or killed? Protestant vs. Catholic is still a fight in some places.

Depending on which selective bits of "traditional beliefs" you'd like to go for, the inferiority of people of color is a "traditional belief". Check out the Civil War, and endless years of missionaries and their sermons and justifications. The jews killed jesus is a "traditional belief". Until very recently, and even now it hasn't changed everywhere, every single year at Easter, every church service made sure everyone knew that the Jews, capital J, killed Jesus. I sat through those services for years and it only extremely recently changed at all, anywhere. Did the FRC and all their buddies suddenly come down with selective amnesia?
