Not gonna get into an argument elsewhere but need to respond:
“If you’re not paying for it, you’re not the customer; you’re the product."
Unless it's healthcare.
Or education.
Or law enforcement.
Those are different.
We pay taxes for every one of those things. We pay for them, although I still think the idea that everything should be a so-called business model is wrong so I am loath to call us "the customer".
In fact, even though we also pay out of pocket and pay insurance companies for healthcare, we also pay for it through our taxes in multiple ways. Certainly in single payer models you are paying through your taxes.
I just don't get what the argument being made here is.

It’s not an argument, it’s a snarky one-off. Not intended as reasoned discourse so much as letting off steam.
ReplyDelete(I could elaborate on some of the underlying things but, well, donwanna.)
It's a case of taking a pithy quote that captures something real (the tendency of "free" services to be funded by selling your attention and/or data about you; a kind of modern corollary to "there's no such thing as a free lunch"), and trying to apply it out of context in a nonsensical way.
ReplyDeleteAmy Young That's fair. There's usually a reason for the snark, and I can usually tell what it is, regardless of if I agree about the particular point. I really didn't get it, which is why I asked, but I also didn't feel like my confusion needed to pollute the main stream, so to speak, so I put my stuff in my own stream. Donwannas accepted at par :)
