My brother used to have one over the (only) bathroom in his (inhabited only by white folk) apartment. He inherited it from our grandfather, who brought it home from the lumber yard he used to run when it closed - and then put it up in the garage where it freaked out our racist grandmother. Which is why he did it.
ReplyDeleteI feel like there may have been a specific point being made within the confines of your family that would not likely pertain to the UNC Charlotte campus.
ReplyDeleteKudos to your grandfather, though.
Once my brother had a kid he took the sign down, too, because nuance and young kids don’t really get along. Nuance and college kids aren’t always the best of friends either, of course, but it would have been a bad venue for trying to make that point even if that was what was intended.
ReplyDeleteAnd who the hell knows what the kid meant anyway.
I can believe he thought it was a way of making a joke. Whether sarcastic to make a point, or ha ha look at all these snowflakes I don't know.
ReplyDeleteHowever, as noted, it betrays a gross lack of insight and understanding as to his own privilege and the terror and misery that sign represented to others. And apparently complete cluelessness about bigotry and racism, what they are and the harm they cause.
Presumably part of the response is educating him and others as to why that was not funny.
