  1. It's literally a globally connected network whose data structures were designed in the 1960s and whose hardware is mostly at best designed in the 1980s. Soooo... I think that's really enough reason.

  3. Well, it's a globally connected network.. getting everyone to agree on an upgrade (not just all the carriers, from large to small, but also every single starving travel agent) is impossible.

    The best bet would probably be to go the IPv6 route and just have a separately running network that's better and semi compatible... but you've seen how long that's taking.
