    The number one bed bug risk place I ever stayed at (White House Hostel on Bowery in NYC, 2002), which was shut down multiple times by the department of sanitation for bed bug infestation, keeping your luggage away from the bed was literally impossible — the "room" consist of e bed and a one foot wide aisle next to it. With luggage storage provided by having the beds raised off the ground by a few feet. And the definition of "bed" being a large board plus a cheap and filthy mattress.

    It is as close as I am ever likely to come to sleeping in a late nineteenth century flophouse — right down to the at least pre-WWII notices of rules, most prominently, no spitting.
