My mother, queen of the over-dramatic catastrophizers.

1) Always remember to start by speaking as if you are speaking to yourself, but in a room with at least one other person.

2) Follow up by saying, "I am speaking to [insert name here of person]". Because any normal person would assume you were just talking aloud to yourself, so make sure to make it an announcement, preferably fraught with unspoken meaning. No, really, you can totally convey this by tone.

3) Optionally, state that This Is Important. Because you must reinforce The Tone.

4) Proceed to give some sort of general information that probably has a point but make sure not to explain the point. Be annoyed when people don't get the point you haven't stated.

[At this point you are reasonably certain no one has died, but you never know.]

5) Restate, including the Catastrophe to Come, but still somehow not making it clear to anyone not inside your head what the catastrophe is supposed to be.

6) Get super annoyed when asked to explain the Catastrophe, specifically, why the listener should mirror your DRAMA.

7) Get Even More Annoyed when listener continues to not be impressed by your DRAMA.

8) Although the above may cycle a few times, at some point huffily conclude, certain that the listener Just Doesn't Understand how Important the Information Conveyed is.

[Meanwhile, even if you still thinks she's nuts, she has effectively managed to rile anybody within a blast radius because she fucking radiates drama, anxiety, and ridiculous fucking baseless Omg, Becky, WE'RE ALL GOING to DIE.]

Btw, I want you to know that because the Scotus is very likely to revisit and approve of the bullshit in Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, apparently my mother will suddenly have no money.

That's the short, direct version. My mother seriously needs to be treated for an anxiety disorder, or personality disorder, or I don't even know what. Can somebody just slip her something mellow?

P.S. This is a real case that the Scotus is re-hearing because it deadlocked when there were only 8 of them. It's a bullshit case to screw over the last remaining strongholds of public union strength or influence to protect American workers, but it's one of the things the GOP has been working toward for a very long time and one of the reasons McConnell held out for Gorsuch. And yes, it's almost a foregone conclusion that this Scotus will vote to break the unions, once again. And yes, it will severely underfund teacher's unions and therefore their ability to bargain for both teachers and students. It may also force them to stop providing a tremendously wide range of support services to their members that extend even into retirement.

At this point, I don't see that other than a miracle of a lawyer/legal team, there's anything anyone can do. I don't think you can just donate money to a union legal fund, but maybe that. Otherwise, it's a done deal.

However, to the best of my knowledge it will not suddenly strip my mother of her retirement or her direct retirement benefits. Some of that may cost her more money, but she will not suddenly end up with nothing. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. Meanwhile, the details of what she spouted off in this regard had more to do with her ongoing hysteria over being involved with my uncle and having decided that my father was a drooling invalid who requires 24 hour care. My opinions on that are fucking drop being involved with your brother, and get the fuck over the fact that your husband isn't dead. Which, btw, gives you access to his vets benefits, and his social security income, together which ain't inconsiderable.
