So close to brilliant! So close. Glimpses of possible genius episode that never quite achieves its potential.
David Suchet is an amazing actor. They needed to use him more, good grief. Facial expression, vocal tone, body language. Super creepy!
Classic haunted house, teen horror flick genre. Could and should have dragged it out to really make something of it. Two part episode would have been great.
Better way to go would have been Suchet's character being the one with some plot twist connection to the alien(s) keeping him alive, or using him to keep them alive, or being an alien trying to survive. The whole father/daughter/mother/son thing didn't work. Probably because they didn't take the time to create a scenario in which it could have worked. Don't go for movie plots if you haven't got movie length amounts of time to work with.
Speaking of the aliens, meh. Making them bugs that are never explained, and which the Doctor basically allows to just go back into stasis or hibernation or spores or whatever is lame. Not to mention that presumably the music or whatever it is that activates them seems to have to be in extremely close proximity or they'd be activating all over all the time with the way music is blaring everywhere these days. Plus, their relationship to wood is never really explained. Are the bugs wood? Do they eat wood? Are they just a manifestation of a hive mind? Are they alien simply because they have LEDs?
Either make Nardole a character in the episode, or don't. He was funny as a character in "The Husbands of River Song" and "The Return of Dr. Mysterio". Don't waste him as a living prop/plot device.
Ok, the vault thing isreally starting to get way past the ugh annoying Moffat garbage point. Stupid and cutesy. Plus, you do not have to pointlessly bring it up the end of every episode just in case we forgot it was there. We didn't. Something genuinely brilliant will have to happen for me not to hate.
So, yeah. Huge potential, Suchet is amazing, some genuine character development for Bill. Overall, worth watching.
P.S. What is with the Beethoven thing? Does somebody involved with the show like Beethoven, or is this just another one of those let's throw a bunch of random red balloons and seagulls in so it seems all significant but is just pointless distraction?

I thought it was a really crappy episode. Like, it was cut together all wrong or something. It was obvious what they were going for, because I've seen it in a million movies, but it just never felt quite right.
ReplyDeletePlus what you said about the explanation. Nonsense. Above and beyond the usual Whovian nonsense.
