Oh, man. The "hippo" problem is rampant in medicine, especially in surgery. Who brings in the most money? You keep what you kill. They get the most say, the best stuff, the most latitude and tolerance for whatever behavior.
It isn't just surgeons, though. Who's the highest paid, who's the most senior, who's the most famous or influential. There are hippos everywhere. And if they see someone nominally in a position of power who isn't throwing their weight around, they mock them as weak and undermine them if possible.
It's amazing, I've never heard this term before but it is So Apt.
