Things that will make me want to hurt you:
(discussing directions to someplace moderately distant)
Me: What towns did you go through?
Other person: We turned on Shortrack Rd.
Me: Ok, but between here and there, which towns did you drive through?
Other: It dead ends and then we knew we were there.
etc.
Other: We went by Bliss. I mean, it says you are going through Bliss but you really go by Bliss.
Me: Great! [omg, the name of a town!!] How did you get to Bliss?
Other: When you get there, it's really easy to see. [Proceeds with detailed description of final destination. Which is not in Bliss.]
Me: Awesome. So before you got to Bliss, how did you get there?
Other: You're almost there when you get to Bliss. [Proceeds with detailed description of all the roads and turns between Bliss and final destination.]
Me: Did you take Route 400?
Other: No, we went through Freedom. [FYI, Rt. 400 dies a good 30 min away from Freedom. This fails to answer the question because one way to get to ways to get to Freedom is taking Rt. 400. In fact, it's a pretty common way.]
Upshot -
No one died, I broke nothing. Well, possibly a small capillary somewhere. Getting just the names of two small towns between here and there was sufficient and at that point I ran away gratefully. Also, I know where Freedom and Bliss are and that was minimally sufficient for figuring out this little back roads adventure.
Point is, if I ask you for names of towns, I mean names of towns. Not a travelogue, not an expository discourse a la Walden. Just. The names. Of the towns.
I will hurt you.
P.S. I found out by looking that it is Short Tract Rd., and it is in a town called Nunda, which is way out of the way. It's a darn good thing that one of the things I did when I first moved back here was drive around and explore a lot of the tiny towns and back roads and State Parks. Otherwise, I would still have no idea what the heck this person was saying.

My answer would inevitably be "I dunno, I put into Google Maps".
