I got a box of those "Santa's Favorites" cookies, which are the current version of those "Jingles" cookies I remember from my yout.

They are a sad imitation of the original. They are tiny, like, almost dollhouse tiny. This is not, I think, separable from their texture, which is dry and crumbly. They disintegrate when you bite them. There is no, for lack of a better term, snap when you bite; they just crumble.

Lastly, the anise flavor is somewhat faint. It's there, but not a lot, and I think there is something about the underlying cookie that is wrapped up into that taste thing, as well. Who knows. Maybe the original recipe contained lard. Anyway, I have tried and been disappointed and now nostalgia has likely increased my butt. In fact, I think a large portion of my butt is made of nostalgia.

Oh, well. Guess I'll just go hipster and make my own cookies anymore. From my own hand-milked cows, and my own hand-churned butter, and my own hand-extracted, sun-dried cane juice. Ha ha ha ha ha! Just kidding. Using the same store-bought, commercially processed ingredients everyone else does. Definitely prefer the version of anise cookies I came up with myself last year. Will use that going forward.

  1. My butt is mostly made of ennui. I think nostalgia is probably better.

  2. I wonder what the nostalgia to ennui conversion factor is?
