My first reaction to this is an expletive.
My second is that while I absolutely do not want to be all we're so superior because we're living in the 21st century, it's NO all the way down. Iow, I recognize that things like the brother marrying a woman if her husband dies to provide for the family is a part of our historical culture, as well. Go read the old testament. Certainly there it was intended as a protection. That was how many thousand years ago?
Meanwhile, people continue to do these things without thinking about the harm they probably always did and they exploit them, even if they know there are more modern customs, behaviors, and options. It's mind boggling to me that we've managed to get as far as we have insofar as treatment and regard of women is concerned.
