That was fun.

That was fun. Woke up this morning to the sound of a thud and whimpering. Mom has achieved item x in a series y of old people things. To wit, falling out of bed and smacking your eye on the corner of the bedside table. She will be seeing the on-call eye doc at their office at 11 am. She looks like she lost 13 rounds at Caesars in Vegas.

  1. Ouch.

Last fall (? May have been 2 yrs ago) my grandmother managed to fall out of bed and hit her cedar chest, breaking ribs.

  2. Update: Mom will live but she is going to look worse before she looks better. Thus far her eye is not in any critical danger, she has been apprised of the important things to watch for; and she has already managed to choke on some water and have a coughing fit without her orbital area puffing up like a balloon and experiencing pain and loss of vision, thus decreasing even further the likelihood of any bone breaks into the sinuses.

Retina looks fine, cataract lens did not dislocate, no palpable breaks, no loss of sensation, extraocular movement intact and painless. Nothing oozing out of places it shouldn't be, orbital septum grossly intact. CT deferred unless develops concerning signs. Coincidentally, person on call was an oculoplastic specialist, so exactly who you'd want to see for trauma.

Ice pack off and on, sleep propped or sitting up for a day or two, gentle cleaning of the multiple superficial but still, er, fluid, scrapes and cuts, antibiotic topical ointment if it makes it feel better, artificial tears in eye if it helps with the whole eyelid swollen shut thing rubbing on the eyeball. Mostly right now she just needs to let the whole shock/post-shock reaction run its course.

She has agreed not to drive and not to go up or down stairs, as well as to let us know if she needs something and let us get it. We will probably have that conversation again tomorrow.
