Although there are always numbers indicating that the US takes the most opioids, this suggests that there are probably a lot of places in the world where people are trying to deal with life this way and then getting trapped by the drugs. Has anyone tried to understand the larger context of why people want/need this help? I'm guessing there's something there, but it's going to be all convoluted and difficult with fuzzy edges.

  1. I haven't read the entire article, but just the beginning is horrifying to me. Tramadol is what I was given when I was having all the pelvic pain and there was a HUGE emphasis on not taking too much within 24 hours, especially at night because you will stop breathing and DIE. I will say that, IME, there was not the same relaxation-type effect one gets with morphine and other opioids that is understandably addictive on a mental and physical level. For me, the pain was still there, I could just ignore it. Psychologically, I can identify with the thought/fear of "If I stop taking this, how much worse will the pain actually be," because I was paranoid about that and would periodically avoid taking it routinely just to be sure I still needed to.

But giving it to cattle? Holy crap!

  2. Yeah. This is a mess. Per the article one of the differences about tramadol is that it is a stimulant, so it doesn't do that drowsy thing. Probably part of why people keep taking it, up to a point.
