One of the things that Sec'y Clinton said in the speech I attended during the primaries was that you couldn't do all the things Bernie Sanders was talking about with public universities because you'd have an untenable fight with the majority of states having Republican governors. It's one of the positions that has, at least officially, shifted to Sanders' side of the argument, probably because it was negotiated before the convention.
The thought that it is a political thing tied to eliminating unwelcome ideas seems like an obvious hypothesis, but I wouldn't have considered it per se until reading this. It now makes me wonder how deliberate a subtext might be there because all those people being able to go to college would also have threatened the exclusivity of a socio-economic elite.
But then, as always, the peasants are revolting.
