P.S. When they say "vision threatening" in a newborn, what they mean is blinding. N. gonorrheal neonatal conjunctivitis, if it can't be successfully treated with I.V. antibiotics literally eats its way into (or through) the cornea. It can do this in adults, as well, as it is one of the few bacteria that can penetrate an intact epithelium (that is, an uninjured eye).
