I know the campaigns don't pick the music that gets played at their rallies, but playing [Pavarotti singing] "Nessun Dorma" from Turandot among the tunes at the end of Trump's rally is either brilliant or twisted or both. Or dumb luck.
I should probably 'splain a bit, or at least sum up:
ReplyDeleteStandard misogynistic Love of a Good Man Redeems Evil Woman plot.
Presumably, if the Good Prince Lollipop doesn't marry her, Princess Cold Bitch (not as far off the Italian as you'd think) would rule after her Emperor father ascends to the many heavens, or whatever. Well, we can't have that.
"Nessun Dorma" is basically the Prince gloating. What he keeps repeating at the end of the aria, and punctuates with a high note, is "Vincerò!", meaning "I'm gonna win!" (insert Tom Hanks from A League of Their Own). P.S. Absolutely no hint of nonconsensual physical contact whatsoever. This is romantic.
The Princess has earlier explained pretty clearly (although still in a mansplain-y kind of way because men wrote this) that she had learned what happened to women based on what had happened to her ancestor, a female ruler, who was raped and murdered by the guy who eventually conquered the kingdom (such an original trope for an uppity female). So, no men for her, thanks!
Guess what happens at the end? He kisses her, she falls in love with him (gee, just like Pussy Galore and James Bond), they get married, everyone exults.
It's not actually a stretch to see this not just as the aria being triumphant, but the whole opera being about a powerful man conquering a powerful woman. In fact, it's about a secretly hiding, technically dispossessed powerful man (Prince Lollipop's been under wraps - no, really) conquering an acknowledged powerful woman in a position of power (the literal heir apparent).
Ugh, actually, I'm hoping it was dumb luck. Otherwise, they have people capable of great subtlety working with Trump and that's just creeping me out.
Plussing for the analysis.
