Today's news reminded me of The Dry Grass of August. It made a much stronger impression on me, and was infinitely more relatable and regrettably instructive about the "South" and racism and violence than To Kill a Mockingbird. In fact, I'd substitute it for that book if I was trying to teach students about literature and history in the US. You should read it, but know going in that it is not a light-hearted read.
