My dad is worried about upsetting my mom. Seriously? You are the one who is ill. As long as you are not being a jerk, other people need to cope with their own being upset, sometimes. You just take care of you.
(She's doing pretty well, all things considered, so I will give her props. Dad just feels like he's ruining everything for everybody and that's just nonsense.)

You should explain the ring theory to him. He's at the middle and gets all the comfort and gets to dump whatever he's feeling. All valid.
