I do not remember this, but it seems to be au courant because there's a thing trying to compare Sanders to Dean out there, now? Anyway, the link is to the radio program on which I heard about it.
Apparently, Howard Dean's campaign got the "Doesn't she look tired?" treatment by the media back when he ran for pres. in that he was supposed to be angry and hot tempered. At some rally they selectively picked up him yelling on an overblown mike and played it endlessly and asked him why he was angry. Or some such. I do not, for the life of me, remember him being portrayed as angry, nevermind this supposed scream being played repetitively.
There's good explanation of the technical details of why and how that sort of "Go Team!" yell ended up sounding, well, exactly as they describe it - kind of a screech. In addition, they seem to suggest that the media didn't collude, they just all thought it was a great story of the angry candidate and played that up as if they didn't have any idea it could influence people. And might not do that again if they thought about it first. To which I say hah. It's the equivalent of clickbait. It would go viral like you wouldn't believe.
Meanwhile, I still don't quite get the comparison of Sanders to Dean. If nothing else, there're only two candidates for the Dem nom. When Dean ran, there were, like, ten? And they weren't being nice to each other, either, iirc.

I totally remember that. It was probably the proverbial straw to his entire candidacy.
ReplyDeleteHuh. Well, apparently it was a very carefully engineered cherry picking of a sound nobody in the room at the time actually heard. So possibly not even actually a real sound, but a partial snippet of a real sound after an engineer played with it. So nice we the people make presidential decisions on the basis of things like this. Totally trust the media, yup.
