We need a Miss Manners or Emily Post or something for the modern age. If you are not in your own home or an enclosed sound proofed space, TURN THE SOUND OFF OR USE EAR BUDS/HEADPHONES. Jfam, people, I do not want to hear your fscking games, conversations, and omg, so awesome ringtones and textones. They Are Not Cute. Note to self: develop portable, directable parabolic reflector.
People really shouldn't have to be told this. Being in public makes it more your responsibility to consider others, not less. It's a shared space, not your opportunity to stake a claim on more personal space.
Also, any time you suddenly feel a burning need to buy me a present, sound blocking headphones would be The gift.
