Here's what I think is stupid about this (btw, I'm not questioning that things happened, I just think there's a lot of stupid, here):
1. You can train people, and/or specifically hire people who know what they are looking at/for. There is also such a thing as a consulting expert and I think the judiciary needs this input as much as the front line security and law enforcement folks.
2. I don't know what the pilot was actually told. I call BS on any professional passenger pilot not knowing standard meteorology terms and instruments. I also call BS on a pilot physically attacking a passenger like they're in a stupid movie. Although it is becoming less true, the vast majority of American passenger pilots started as military pilots. Don't tell me the military trains its pilots to go around attacking people like they're in an action movie. If he did that, he's an ass. Call security and let them do the Rambo thing, if that's even appropriate.
3. Lastly, what kind of lawyer did the MIT student have? Are the laws that inflexible and stupid in Boston? And did MIT itself, out of an abundance of self interest in educating the powers that be in its home town region throw its weight behind her and say, hey, here's some facts and info to help you with this security thing. Because there should be an awful lot of people potentially at risk for this sort of encounter coming from such a concentrated source of nerdery and it's a distraction and waste of time and resources to arrest them all and convict them and assign them community service.
