I guess the new Dr.
I guess the new Dr. Who episode is on tomorrow night. I only know that because BBC America has been constantly playing through the David Tennant and Matt Smith episodes. They might have played the Capaldi ones, but I haven't been watching constantly, so who knows. It does confirm for me that I cannot find much redeeming about most of the episodes after Rory and Amy. **
The only thing I'm really looking forward to is that BBCA has announced they will be showing old/classic episodes every morning for a while, starting Sunday at 9am with Genesis of the Daleks, followed by The Seeds of Doom at noon (Ah, Krynoids). Then more Tom Baker at 10am each day. We're gonna need a bigger DVR. And possibly a really, really long scarf. And a hat. And some jelly babies.
** Whining about my inability to find redemption in the post-Rory/Amy episodes.
I suppose I should say spoiler space here, although everything's been out for so long, it's kind of silly.
Anyway, the Clara/Oswin character had some potential, but she's almost entirely been wasted on me. The whole Impossible Girl thing completely failed to interest me.
Danny had some real potential, as well. I'd almost rather they hadn't immediately gone for the boyfriend/girlfriend thing and just let him develop as an independent character, but apparently all the companions have to have a love interest, now, and they generally have to die in some way.
Except Donna, where it was part of the episode that introduced her, but even then she was quite independent. Plus, Lance totally deserved what he got.
I am a dork and totally loved the Tom Baker cameo in the one episode.
Remain completely unconvinced that making The Master a woman was anything other than a sop to critics, and am still not seeing a character that's really definable, there. I mean, John Simm gave you believable insanity. I have no idea what Missy is, other than a trite, feminized shortening of "The Master".
So not exactly looking forward to the new Capaldi, but will be happy to DVR all the old Tom Baker (and others if they show them).

Capaldi can at least act and has some gravitas to him. I don't think they quite knew what to do with him last season, and none of the episodes left any lasting impression on me.
ReplyDeleteI did recently re-watch the War/10/11 crossover, and that was surprisingly good, if for no other reason than because Hurt's War Doctor went out of his way to cut both of them-- but especially Smith's 11-- down to size. "Are you capable of speaking without flapping your hands about?!"
