Apparently the Senate may be looking to defund Planned Parenthood following some "undercover" videos. Looking at several different articles about this, it appears to me that there continues to be this idea that all Planned Parenthood does is kill babies. No cancer screening, no healthcare for poor women, or women who for many reasons may not have full access to care, no contraception, no education, no prevention or treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. Just baby killing.

I don't work there, so can only look at the same sources as everyone else. As an absolute binary, yes, they perform abortions. It is a single digit percentage of the overall work that they do. Federal law already prohibits funding for abortions, so federal funds do no go to those activities, they go to the other community and women's health care activities. Therefore, defunding would not change anything about abortions, but it would affect the accessibility of other necessary medical care for women.

I've linked 3 different articles related to this. One of them purports to show how Planned Parenthood tried to strongarm the media into not showing the illegally obtained videos. Being a research professional, there are, in fact, entirely accurate and appropriate statements in the letter. There are ethical and legal standards for consent in medical procedures and research. The videos do, in fact, violate those standards and patient privacy. It is, in fact, necessary to examine tissue from an abortion (or a birth, in fact), however morbid that may appear. Laboratory and facility visits with questions and discussions do occur and are required; some of which would sound less than reasonable out of context.

As far as obtaining fetal tissue is concerned, if you are opposed to the whole concept and all the research associated with that, then you will not find anything acceptable in how that tissue needs to be obtained. If it ever develops into a life-saving treatment, will you then refuse that treatment because of how it was derived? Will you deny it to others because it offends your personal beliefs, even if it does not offend theirs?

Lastly, the Center for Medical Progress is a political, pro-life group strongly tied to Operation Rescue. Their grasp on ethics is interesting, to say the least, and they are not motivated by trying to improve women's healthcare.
