Today has already included:
2 farmers markets
walks
1 breakfast
washing my car - maple, cottonwood, bird, pollen - yuck
pruning the apricot trees due to what I am pretty sure at this point is borers
cleaning up after the pruning
meeting the largest malamute I have ever seen
It was 30 something degrees this morning when I went with my dad to the farmers markets. I had to dig out my winter clothes and a hat and gloves. What is the deal, hey? It's early days, but there are starting to be things to get at the markets. This is also where the very large dog comes in.
There are lots of people who bring their dogs to the markets around here. Well, someone had this huge, fluffy dog with them today. A 160 lb. not yet full grown Alaskan Malamute, that was a rescue dog. This does not surprise me. Someone probably thought they were getting a cute puppy and instead got something that doubled in size every day. He's at least 28" at the shoulder. This is unusually large, even for a malamute, afaik. He definitely needs an owner who is a clear alpha, but he's very affectionate and licks you and rolls over for you to rub his tummy, which is somewhat comical in a dog that large. His name is Keemo.
So, yeah, I was concerned about the trees and my dad and I looked them over and we're pretty sure we have borers, which is bad. I have to find out what else we can do, but since we don't use the nasty types of chemicals, I'm not so sure. They've been sprayed with dormant oil and with a horticultural fruit tree spray that has neem oil and pyrethrin in it, but I don't want to lose the trees to stupid, ugly moths and their larvae (these are ugly moths - they look like wasps or flies).
We pruned off as much of the affected branches as possible, although I'm going to have to see if we have some kind of ladder so I can get way up in the crown. Even though these are dwarf trees and we had them pruned professionally, they are at least 15-20 feet tall. So much for 10-12 foot high dwarf fruit trees. I will be sad if we lose the trees.

I have also done the farmers market thing. No dogs except service animals allowed though. Traffic is just too high. And I've done the traditional grocery shopping too. Rest of day will likely be spent in kitchen.

ReplyDeleteJez tribell, it did take me over an hour to actually get out of bed.
ReplyDeleteI woke up once at 10:30, thought "nah" and slept for an hour more. Gabe was being super cuddly. I couldn't move him!
