Well, that's a disappointing piece of information.
Well, that's a disappointing piece of information. Not just the facts of its Nazi origins, but the lies and coverups that have actively continued until extremely recently. This is the first I've heard of it, and I'm particularly disturbed by that because it appears to have been buried even amongst professional circles. The same circles that occasionally try to be sensitive to concerns about Richard Strauss and Wagner and the associations with the Nazi era. The same circles that still debate Furtwängler (for whom there is no evidence of ever joining the Nazi party) and Von Karajan (who did join). Germany may have been struggling all these years to deal with its past, but Austria doesn't seem to have been so burdened. Austria needs to look long and hard in the mirror, I think. In fact, I think I can live henceforth without the Vienna Philharmonic, and certainly without the New Year's Concert.
