  1. ...Why?

I am honestly surprised that the NRA even had the chance to muddy the waters on this one.  When ABC's list of important things to know includes, "Has carrots in fridge" halfway down the list that's kind of a sign that maybe his resume is a little light for the position.

That he's less than ten years out of residency did not make the list.

Also, ABC cannot even fucking count.

  2. His CV actually isn't that light, and he's an outspoken supporter of the position that guns are a public health issue. Hence the NRA. He's a bit of a crusader.

  3. It's not a light resume for someone who completed his residency in 2006.  It is a light resume for the office of Surgeon General of the United States.

I don't care at all about the guns or the NRA, I'm just surprised that they have been the issue here instead of, "has carrots in fridge."

    And ABC still can't count.

  4. It's an interesting question. I mean, yeah, usually it's someone who's been in practice for a while, but now I'm curious to go look up the resumes of the last several SGs, just to see what's what. That, and I'm curious about the politicization of the office over time, esp. considering he was a founder or leader of an organization that was very pro-ACA.

  5. I had actually done that a few months ago when everyone was hyperventilating about the NRA angle.  In the half an hour of looking into it, it seems like it's a 30+ years of experience kind of position (for high achievers) and I don't think I found a recent one with less than 20 years.  But I didn't go back all that far.

Clearly the office has a political element to it, especially for those of us old enough to remember Koop.  That said, I regard "Doctors for Obama" to be more or less a nullity for Murthy, and a decision of questionable wisdom for Obama himself-- there is no way that does not look weird in combination with the otherwise scanty resume.

  6. i read it and also thought someone with more experience might be a better choice.
