Exodus to Canada
Statehood for Oklahoma meant bad news for African-American residents: with the territory's new status came severe Jim Crow laws that dealt a blow to the rights of blacks. In 1911 ninety families, including these members of the Mapp family, left Oklahoma to settle in Amber Valley, located in the province of Alberta, Canada. The same year, the Canadian government adopted a complete ban on black immigration, making African-descended peoples the first ethnic group barred from Canada by federal decree.
