There are some awesomely cool videos from the news folks of the storm as it picks up water from the lake and turns it into snow. You can see the lake effect snow forming. It is scary and cool.

Still many people stranded on the Thruway - very bad - they have not been getting food, water, and fuel to most of them and seemingly have not been able to rescue them, either.

They probably should just give up on projected snow fall totals through Thursday because they are at 8 feet and growing. At some point "a lot" and "really bad" are probably sufficient. But it's only falling at 1-2"/hr now, instead of 3-5"/hr. Yay?

The projected weather beyond Thursday includes ... warming! But wait! It is supposed to go up into the 50's Sunday or Monday - and still be precipitating. So aaaalllll this snow will melt. And it will be raining. I hope you like floods.

Sadly, there have been both fatalities and snowblower finger removals. Expected, but still sad. Not nearly as much power out as you'd expect, which is good. Lots of announcements reminding people that they have to clear away the vents for their furnaces so they don't die of CO poisoning. Concerning in the areas that had 5+ feet of snow plus drifting. There are many people who literally cannot get out of their homes. They are one story and they are stuck. I don't know what you do then. Open the door and dig an air hole at the top?

Apparently, some of the new fancy furnaces like to put the outlets right at ground level, which seems supremely stupid in a part of the country that easily gets a foot of snow every single winter. That means every flipping day there's any snow you have to check for drifting snow to make sure it doesn't block the outlet because either blocking it will cause it to shut the furnace off entirely as a safety feature (fun if you are sleeping or away and pipes break, etc.), or it will smother you in CO if it stays on and you don't figure it out and clear it quickly. Yep, these high efficiency features sound great in a lab.

  1. (And now that I have a keyboard instead of a phone, that storm seems awesome in... more than one sense, not all of them good.)

  2. Indeed. I am sure that aweful applies, as well.
