  1. Not reading the article right now, but I love the headline implication that "fungus chemical" is something entirely novel to antibiotic science.

  2. Yeah, the researcher himself does not take that approach. In fact, it was something from a strain of Aspergillus, although I don't really know how common the particular variant is. Especially as it was found in only one soil sample. I am also amused by how they refer to "a park" in some of the articles as the location the soil came from. As if there are so many different national parks in Nova Scotia. P.S. Please don't go digging up Nova Scotia; it's not that big.
    Anyway, I will eventually look up the Nature article, because metalloproteinases, a vaguely related thing to the metallolactamases, were one of the things I studied, so I find this stuff interesting.

  3. I studied soil flora somewhat (though mostly not fungi) on my second attempt at grad school. I love this sort of thing - but I'm definitely not chasing it down the rabbit hole right now.
