So I gather this source is a little biased toward the left side of the political spectrum.
So I gather this source is a little biased toward the left side of the political spectrum. That aside, what about how the Red Cross spends its money could be that big a secret? I mean, it is pertinent to me as a potential donor whether or not that money goes to a person who's homeless post disaster of the week versus a presumably reasonably well paid law firm. And, for example, if the way the funds get distributed implies a bias favoring certain groups over others, whether intentional or not, this is also relevant. Otoh, if this is a private firm, I believe they are protected by law from being required to hand out certain info.

... There's something entirely too wrong, nay, Wrong about the Red Cross having trade secrets. Like, even, what?!
ReplyDeleteThat, indeed, is the question.
ReplyDeleteOh, I do clearly remember family members of mine-- often and vocally-- complaining that any charity which had enough money for stamps to mail out donation requests clearly didn't need enough their donations.
ReplyDeleteAnd now I have clear visions of people thundering righteously, "Their budget for postage is HOW MUCH?!!?"
(That said, you wouldn't think there would be that much variation, once you account for size of organization on these matters. And the argument that donors deserve some insight is a strong one.)
If the country's swat teams can be 501c3s exempt from foia requests, why would the Red Cross honor them?
ReplyDeleteSWAT teams are tax exempt?!
ReplyDeleteSome of them. Which you know, fair enough — these are basically collaborative nonprofit orgs that operate a swat team for multiple police departments. Where it goes off the rails for me is their assertion that they're also immune from foia because they're a private corp. I don't have the link handy but someone published something about that in the last day.
ReplyDeleteMy head hurts.
