Anybody know how to fix an electronic garage door?

Anybody know how to fix an electronic garage door? Or whom you call to get it fixed? The remotes and the push button in the garage itself work, the door just won't open. You can open it manually, but it takes two people (lg door) and it won't catch, you have to stand there and hold it open. I assume it is something mechanical but really have no clue. This also only seems to happen when it gets particularly cold, but that may be coincidental.
Halp!

  1. If you find out let me know! My garage has issues closing in some weather.

  2. I call the people who installed the door, but that's not helpful if you didn't have it installed yourself and so don't know who they are. There are usually companies that specialize in garage doors, though; you should be able to find one.

  4. My problem is mostly that it doesn't happen every time so I don't even know what to tell them.

  5. Liberal use of the word "intermittent" and let them figure it out, since they are the experts, is how I normally deal with that sort of thing.

  6. It turns out there are, indeed, garage door companies, and they make house calls. Problems id'd:
    1. Ice. Nearly invisible thin coating of ice on door, significantly increasing door's weight. Thus, it did have everything to do with the unusually cold days and propensity for this insidious ice formation.
    2. Stretching springs. Probably need replacement, but not good to do now, so tightened but modified so the door doesn't go crazy when it is not cold and iced. Also, could probably have used 2 on each side when installed. Can decide to do that in the warmer weather, if wish.
    3. Adjusted clutch for lifting the heavier door with the weaker springs.

Corollary to #1, above: The door was originally insulated, which would have significantly, if not completely, eliminated the icing problem. It is now an uninsulated door because the plowing company damaged the door two years ago, and my parents did not demand they replace it with same or better door.

    Thus ends today's lesson.
