Meant to post this before I got distracted by TX & Wil Wheaton (sorry Evan "Skwid" Langlinais).

Meant to post this before I got distracted by TX & Wil Wheaton (sorry Evan "Skwid" Langlinais). Some of the imaging and technical and other staff took me out to dinner tonight. It was a huge compliment.

We went to Phnom Penh in Chinatown. The first dish is called Butter Beef. It's partly raw, but very tender and has a tasty sauce. The first pic is the platter, the second is after it's served. Then there's an iced drink made of sweet red beans, gelatin, and fruit bits, and crushed ice. It can be made with ice cream or milk but this version wasn't. It's sweet and refreshing.

Other things they ordered were the butter garlic deep fried frogs legs, special chicken wings, both with a lemon sauce, and a minced stir fried pork hot pot that had veggies and a little chili and a lot of lemongrass. All of which were tasty. Somewhere in there, there's also fried rice with prawns, and pea tips sautéed with garlic.

For dessert, we got durian with sticky rice and "layer cake". The durian was mostly the sticky rice and coconut milk, with just a little durian, which I was informed was either frozen or canned, so it was softer and milder than fresh would have been. You still got a hint that it must have a pungent odor, but it tastes sweet. Fresh durian, it seems, is very expensive and til the best kind comes from Thailand and is called "golden pillows".

The layer cake is made from glutinous rice. I'm told that the flavor of this was closest to pandan, which is a plant leaf from the Phillipines. It seems pandan's best used as an aromatic to scent the water when you make rice, otherwise there is virtually no taste. This was the one thing we all disliked.

Then we walked around Chinatown a bit and got some moon cakes (usually a fall treat), and large bao for lunch tomorrow. I got a moon cake with lotus paste filling. Nom.

  1. Your co-workers have a much more adventuresome concept of going out than mine do.  This looks really fun.  It's a shame that the layer cake didn't taste good.  It looks lovely.

  2. Ugh, seriously. The only places we were able to get my team to go as a group were Applebees and Cracker Barrel. :-/

  3. Well, I am on the Pacific rim and was also the only "white" person in attendance. I think I have better odds of an adventure :)

  4. There are several people who I would generally consider "foodies" in my department, as in liking food and trying the newest bistro in the foodie districts, but not necessarily daring ones.  The closest I've seen was someone ordering sushi from a Chinese restaurant when everyone else was starting to make icky faces about just being in the building.  In general, "daring" is not a quality that I would associate with very many at my company, especially where food is concerned.
